Not only do fruits and veggies make for tasty treats, but they're also packed with nutrients including vitamins, minerals, and fibre too! Time and time again, studies have shown a clear link between a high fruit and veg consumption with improvements in health such as reducing the risk of high blood pressure, obesity, heart disease etc. Hence the importance of the all too familiar 5-a-day campaign that encourages us to eat our 5x 80g portions of fruit & veg each day. But despite the clear benefits, the Health Survey for England found that only 29% of adults were getting in their 5-a-day!
But how does this link to the environment?
According to the One Blue Dot campaign by the British Dietetic Association (BDA) "Seasonal, locally produced fresh vegetables and fruits are a better choice." Here's just a few reasons why that is ...
- You'll reduce the amount of fossil fuels needed to transport produce from abroad.
- You're less reliant on pesticides and other potentially unhealthy chemicals often used to grow produce out of season.
- You'll help boost the local economy and strengthen your local community.
So how can we help?
Myself and 3 other dietetic students went round visiting local markets and shops so we could get an idea of the kind of produce available and how much it costs. This helped us run our sustainable food stand in The Hub where we were able to talk to students about:
- The best places to shop for produce.
- When different fruits and vegetables are in season.
- More cost effective ways to shop.
